A number of UAE university students, enrolled in the Dubai Carbon Centre for Excellence’s (Dubai Carbon’s) youth engagement initiative, the Carbon Ambassador Programme, which is supported by Dubai Carbon in collaboration with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), have developed a plan to build sustainable bus stops by recycling 20ft industrial containers supplied by DP World. The programme is aligned to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Carbon Ambassador Programme, launched by Dubai Carbon, involves university students in voluntary efforts related to sustainable development and green economy. It provides them with training and capacity building necessary to shape leaders of tomorrow.

The students will review this ambitious project with representatives from DEWA, DP World, and Dubai Carbon. This will help students to evaluate the direction, concept, project plan, and milestone goals to complete the project. The students will also be learning essential concepts such as energy balance, project timeline management, and budgeting.

“In line with the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which aims to maintain Dubai’s position as a global hub for trade, finance, tourism, and green economy, DEWA supervises this initiative in collaboration with Dubai Carbon. We have a clear strategy to develop National talent. DEWA spares no effort to train and develop young leaders and enhance their knowledge and experience, especially in the energy sector, in collaboration with educational institutions. These efforts serve the national interest and benefit the country and its citizens. To support its vision to become a sustainable world class utility, DEWA exerts all efforts to keep the environment and save the resources by keeping up-to-date with international developments in environmental areas to support sustainable development, for generations to come,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.

“Empowering our youth is of paramount importance in building a sustainable future in Dubai and the UAE. The Carbon Ambassadors Programme is an excellent tool to educate the young generation, and encourage them to take part in public awareness efforts and come up with new initiatives that enrich both the present and future,” said Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation.

The programme also combines a broad public awareness campaign and training programmes that enable young people to consciously interact with personal, local and global perspectives. Around 40 Carbon Ambassadors participate in the programme for one year. They are trained in sustainability, carbon emission reductions, and climate change mitigation.

“Today, the students have successfully completed module 1 of the Sustainability Programme. They are now qualified to start training and activities for the next module: Carbon Emission Reductions. At Dubai Carbon, we are proud to sponsor this programme that can spotlight the talent and ingenuity of the region’s green pioneers of tomorrow,” said Waleed Salman, Chairman of Dubai Carbon.

“To secure a green future for the UAE, we must motivate our youth to adopt a green frame of mind. We have to start now to begin cultivating new sustainable industry leaders, and it is them who will lead us into the future. We have to guide them, and above all, constantly promote them,” said Ivano Iannelli, CEO of Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence.

The Carbon Ambassador Programme, which was launched earlier this year, is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.
